I remembered the first time I ate my very first broccoli, my mom always used that story during family reunions as my story was pretty unique and funny. Truth is, only a few kids kid likes their veggies, and when I say few – it’s like 2 out of 5 kids. Studies show that kids especially toddlers are used to sweet things and sticks to one texture. Broccoli for example has multi-texture and its taste differs on how you prepare it. I often get this question “how do I make (trick) my kids into eating vegetables”
I have a toddler and here’s what I do to make (not trick) him into eating greens.
1. GET INSPIRED! Great ideas for planning wholesome and fun lunches are just a mouse click away – so, you don’t have to do-it alone! I also have great news for you – read until the end.
2. MAKE A MEAL PLAN. Making a weekly meal plan not only helps to ensure that your family eats healthier but it will also save you time, money and stress.
• Time-Saving Tip: When making out your meal plan, consider which dinners lend themselves to also being a great lunch. And rather than just serving the same thing you had for dinner again for lunch, think of ways to repurpose your leftovers, such as turning leftover grilled chicken breasts into super easy chicken salad sandwiches.
3. EXPOSE THEM. Kids are curious and we must seize this window period by exposing them to different greens together with their favorite meal. Studies show that it takes 10 times for children to get used to the taste and texture and more studies prove that kids learn from copying things. If you combine both studies, if you lead by example and eat veggies in front o your kid then chances are they are gonna copy you! Repeat that habit until your kid learns how to eat them on their own!
4. PREP AHEAD {WITH YOUR KIDS!} Just a little prep time over the weekend can go a long way in making things quicker and easier for you to provide a healthy homemade lunch during the busy week ahead! as possible, such as:
• Making various sandwich fillings and healthy dips
• Slicing up your favorite fruits and veggies for use as lunch sides throughout the week ahead
• Creating your own healthy snack mixes
• Baking a batch of healthy muffins or cookies and freezing them for lunch box treats
5. REMEMBER, KEEP IT SIMPLE! Focus instead on preparing whole-food-based lunches with affordable fresh ingredients and easy!!
